A dry look at a dynamic organization Dec 16, 2008 DST is an amazing organization. I'm not a sister, not even a Divine 9 member. But, I am an NPC fraternity member and an alum of a university with a strong DST chapter. After school, I met many spirited, successful Deltas. And the same goes for AKA.
I bought this book because I like learning about sorority history. I wanted to know about the rift between AKA, when some members formed DST. The book answered these questions. But, it did not answer many other questions. Like, what was going on at Howard in 1920 for Zeta Phi Beta to form? And why did Sigma Gamma Rho form in Indiana? I also wanted to know about the struggles and successes of local chapters that affiliated with DST.
Instead, the book was filled with too many boring details. :( I do like how the author mentioned socioeconomic struggles. Especially during the Depression, when collegiate Deltas still wanted to party like it was 1925! And the issue of complexion among African American women! And prominent women who helped create the sorority! Some of these topics were touched on, but they were lost in the extra details. :(
If you don't know anything about DST, or if you seriously want to charter a chapter at your school, then you should read this book. It will help you make your case for chartering the organization.
In Search of Sisterhood: Delta Sigma Theta and the Challenge of the Black Sorority Movement Oct 23, 2008 I am really enjoying the book "In Search of Sisterhood:Delta Sigma Theta and the Challenge of the Black Sorority Movement." I have a better understanding of black sororities.
A Must Read.. Jun 23, 2008 Of course I enjoyed the book, but I will admit, it's a book "study" in a sense. It's not an easy read, and if you're looking for pure entertainment, you'll be sadly disappointed. If you're looking for a glimpse into history and an understanding of what the black woman had to endure in the early 20th century (one that was college-educated), this is the book for you. Also, women aspiring to be a part of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority may find this book intriguing and helpful.
GREATEST BOOK EVER Apr 28, 2008 I appreciate the promptness of arrival. The book was in better condition that its description
Even If You're Not a Delta Jan 23, 2008 I am not a Delta, but both of my sisters are, so I picked up this book. It is an easy read and very informative. I would recommend it to every Black woman from a historical standpoint, Greek or not.
